Andrea Renda to become new CEPS Director of Research

The Board of CEPS has officially appointed Andrea Renda, Senior Research Fellow, as Director of Research for a three-year term. He will be leading the organisation’s agenda and research priorities from 1 November 2023 onwards. Andrea Renda will work closely with the team of CEPS Senior Research Fellows to promote research excellence and relevance. He will also be responsible for ensuring the quality of research methodologies and outputs. As the new Director of Research, Andrea will take over from current co-Directors Cinzia Alcidi and Steven Blockmans, who have jointly held the position since October 2020. Both Cinzia and Steven will continue their invaluable contribution to CEPS as Senior Research Fellows – Cinzia on economic policy, jobs and skills, and Steven in the domains of foreign policy and institutions.

Senior Research Fellow and Head of the CEPS Unit on Global Governance, Regulation, Innovation and the Digital Economy (GRID). He is Adjunct Professor of Digital Policy at the School of Transnational Governance of the European University Institute (EUI), in Florence (Italy); A non-resident Senior Fellow at Duke University, and Visiting Professor of AI policy at the College of Europe in Bruges. He is a Fellow of the World Academy of Arts and Science, a CITI Fellow at Columbia University’s Centre for Tele-Information;  a member of the European Parliament’s STOA International Advisory Board; Co-Chair of the OECD working group on Artificial Intelligence Risks and Accountability; co-Director of the Forum for Cooperation in Artificial Intelligence; and Director of the Trade and Technology Dialogue. He is Vice-Chair of the ESIR High-Level Expert Group at the European Commission DG Research and Innovation; a member of the Scientific Committee of the Smart Specialisation Strategies for Sustainability (S4) platform at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre; and a fellow of the European Commission’s DG GROW for 2023.

His current research interests include regulatory governance, competition policy, sustainable development, innovation and industrial policy, and the ethical and policy challenges of emerging technologies, in particular artificial intelligence. A prolific author and keynote speaker, Andrea provides regular advice to several institutions, including the European Commission, the European Parliament, the OECD, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, and contributes to the success of many more. Andrea joined CEPS in 2005.

Andrea holds a PhD in Law and Economics, attained at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
