The elections to the next European Parliament are fast approaching. In the second event of our EP election series, we will reflect on the EP’s past and following term through the frames of three key topics: decision-making coalitions, transparency and lead candidates.

As the ‘grand coalition’ of EPP and S&D reached its end in 2019, we will reflect on the decisive coalitions that pushed through legislation and discuss whether Renew fulfilled its predicted role as ‘kingmaker’. We will look further into likely coalitions that could shape the EU’s policy agenda in the following term, and what that means for the EU’s agenda and the key role that the EPP is likely to play – also in response to the rise of the far-right.

Following multiple scandals, the EP has revised its internal transparency rules, and the institutions have initiated the creation of an inter-institutional ethics body. The panel will discuss whether this is sufficient to prevent another Quatargate and whether the EP has restored lost trust ahead of the elections.

After the EP elections, the newly elected MEPs will vote first on the Commission President and then on the College of Commissioners. We will discuss the inter-institutional aspects of the EP elections and debate the potential conditions for the EP’s support. Additionally, we will ask whether the lead candidate procedure is still functional – and how else one could determine the (next) Commission President.
