Daniel Cassidy-Deketelaere is currently CEPS’ Editor-in-Chief.
He has over ten years professional experience working in European affairs, undertaking a range of roles including editorial, project management, communications, social media strategy, media relations and public affairs/lobbying. He was previously Managing Editor/Senior Managing Editor for a major European Commission dissemination portal focused on research policy and innovation for five years (CORDIS). In that role, he was editor of a monthly print magazine and many bespoke thematic print publications, as well as responsible for setting the editorial focus/strategy for new audiovisual products, including a monthly podcast and videos.
He has worked for a communications agency, a large international lobbying firm, two industry associations and a third country diplomatic mission to the European Union. He began his Brussels-based career as a Schuman intern at the European Parliament.
He is a skilled writer and has experience in drafting and editing a variety of different content formats, including research reports, editorials, op-eds, press releases, policy briefs, online articles (focused on scientific topics), position papers, factsheets and online digital content (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitter).
In his previous organisation, Tipik Communications Agency, he was also asked to contribute regularly to tenders, specifically background research, brainstorming, drafting and editing.
Whilst not an academic, he has undertaken several research projects throughout his professional career, the most recent being a comprehensive analysis on LGBTI rights in central and eastern Europe for DG JUST, a project that occurred two years in a row. He undertook this project whilst simultaneously carrying out his duties as CORDIS Managing Editor.
Other ad hoc research projects he has been asked to undertake throughout his professional career have included: EU food safety regulations, EU trade policy, data protection policy and consumer rights.
From a project management viewpoint, as Senior Managing Editor/Managing Editor of CORDIS, he was responsible for a small team of freelance writers, providing them with commissions, editing their work, providing feedback and ensuring that all editorial deadlines were met. In a similar vein, he currently manages a small team of external freelance editors at CEPS. He has also developed strong negotiation and conflict management skills after working closely with not only the CORDIS client but many other European Commission DGs and Executive Agencies. He has also held line management and quality control responsibilities in almost every other role he has undertaken in his professional career.
Mother tongue English, he can also competently speak Italian, French and Dutch.
